We spoke with Kirsty Marijewycz, a passionate colour consultant and decorator, about her career, the impact of colour on interior design, and her love for Staalmeester brushes.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and tell us how you got started as a colour consultant and decorator?
“I actually stumbled into this profession by accident. I was an unemployed art school graduate with a degree in photography and struggled to find a job. My boyfriend at the time suggested I should take a course in painting and decorating. I was 25, the only woman in a class full of men. Although it was a tough year, I eventually found opportunities to work as an apprentice and started doing renovation projects. This led to the creation of my own business, KM Paint.”
When did you start delving into colour and colour psychology?
“I started noticing how colour could transform a room and even affect your mood. For example, yellow makes you feel happy, while blue is calming. That intrigued me, so I took a sabbatical and moved to Paris, where I spent a year studying colour theory and psychology. It was fascinating to learn how colour can influence behaviour and well-being.”
What inspired you to become both a painter and a colour consultant?
“I wanted an active job and to be my own boss. Those were the main reasons for me. The creative side came later, when I realised how much colour could enrich my work. What attracts me is the freedom: I can choose where and how I work. I’ve lived in many different places, and my work allows me to travel, meet new people, and take on interesting projects.”
What are your main tasks as a colour consultant?
“People usually reach out to me when they are renovating their homes and don’t know how to combine colours to create harmony. Every house and client is different, so I get to know them well and explore the space. I provide them with colour samples and let them observe them in different lighting for a few days. The goal is to ensure that the chosen colour reflects their personality and creates the atmosphere they want. With brands, matching the personality with the brand colours is important as well. For example, did you know that the purple colour of your brushes used to be considered the colour of kings? It is perceived as a very prestigious colour. In my opinion this very well fits the distinctiveness of your brand and high quality products.”
What types of projects do you enjoy the most?
“I work a lot on renovation projects, especially with builders. I find it fascinating to see how a house is constructed and love being part of that process. But what makes me happiest is when I get to design an entire house, from the colour scheme down to the smallest details. I enjoy the combination of technical and creative challenges.”
How did you discover Staalmeester brushes?
“Five years ago, I found Staalmeester online. My first impression was how aesthetically pleasing the brushes were, with their purple bristles and beechwood handles. They’re not only beautiful but also functional and of high quality. The look attracted me, but the quality is what truly convinced me.”
Do you use Staalmeester brushes for all your projects? Do you have a favourite?
“I use them for specific projects, especially when precision is needed. My favourite is the ‘one series,’ particularly the fine artist brushes. They are ideal for detail work. I often use them for painting furniture because I’m a perfectionist and love crisp lines and smooth finishes. The brushes are perfect for fine-line work, and I always have a few with me for any job.”
What is your experience with using brushes for decorative finishes?
“Staalmeester’s decorative brushes have helped me learn new techniques, such as creating brush strokes for a unique finish. In the beginning, I always aimed for a smooth, stroke-free finish, but I’ve learned that a hand-painted look can also add character to a project.”
How do you maintain your Staalmeester brushes?
“After use, I soak my brushes in warm water to loosen the paint. Once they’re clean, I hang them up to dry and store them in their original packaging to maintain their shape. Taking care of my brushes is just as important as the painting itself, as I want them to stay in top condition.”
What have been your biggest challenges as a colour consultant and decorator?
“The biggest challenge was being accepted as a woman in a male-dominated industry. Many older men ignored me or didn’t take me seriously at first. But over time, I proved my skills and built my confidence. Additionally, working as a freelancer is challenging; you do everything yourself, from making quotes to marketing. It took me years to learn how to run my business efficiently.”
Where do you get your inspiration from?
“I get my inspiration from the real world. I love walking around cities and observing colours in restaurants, galleries, and fashion. Art is also a big source of inspiration for me. Many of the colour palettes I choose begin with a piece of art in the room. I don’t really use Pinterest; I prefer to choose colours based on what I see in everyday life.”
Do you have any exciting projects you’re currently working on?
“I’m currently working on a large renovation that will take several months. I’m also working on another major project by the coast, where the client wants hand-painted walls for a unique finish. It’s a challenging project, but I’m excited to see the result.”
What advise would you give new painters that are just starting out?
“The most important advice I can give is: don’t be afraid to make mistakes and keep learning. Also, good preparation is crucial, and invest in high-quality products as soon as you can. This has greatly improved my work and contributes to long-term customer satisfaction. I have learned that good preparation is 80% of the work.”
