Help! Which brush do I need for my project?

Choosing the right brush(s) for your project is done in two steps.

First, it is important to know what type of paint you will be using. Based on the type of paint, you determine which Staalmeester series you can choose. Then you look at the type of project you want to carry out to determine the type of brush. For example, are you planning to use a water-based paint to paint furniture with both smaller and larger surfaces? Then choose an oval brush from the Pro-Hybrid series or choose to use a Staalmeester microfelt roller and lay it off with a decoration spalter from the One by Staalmeester series. Detailed below is step 1: ”How do I decide which Staalmeester series I need?”

Water-based paints

When using a water-based paint, the choice between our series is very wide. Our Original series is specially designed for water-based paints and therefore the perfect match.

If you are also planning to paint a project with an oil-based paint soon, we recommend you choose our Pro-Hybrid series. This series has been developed for use with both water-based and oil-based paints. Compared to the Original series, the brushes from the Pro-Hybrid series give a little more resistance, allowing it to move not only the lighter water-based paints but also the heavier oil-based paints. As a result, the Pro-Hybrid series can be used for any type of paint.

For the real passionate painter, we have our One by Staalmeester series. This series, like the Pro-Hybrid series, can be used with any type of paint. But, the One series is our ultimate top segment! With this extremely soft fibre, you create a mirror-smooth end result without brush marks. The One by Staalmeester series is the Rolls-Royce among brushes!

Oil-based paints

Our Classic series contains brushes specially developed for oil-based paints. The black-haired brushes in this series feature a mix of natural and synthetic black (pig) hair, providing the perfect resistance for setting up the heavier oil-based paints.

In addition to the Classic series, the Pro-Hybrid brushes are also very well suited in combination with oil-based paints. Compared to the Classic series, the Pro-Hybrid series contains a 100% synthetic fibre that is not only very well suited for more modern synthetic paints but also for water-based paints. With the Pro-Hybrid series, you are therefore ready for any job.

For the real enthusiast, we have our One by Staalmeester series. This series, like the Pro-Hybrid series, can be used with any type of paint. But, the One series is our ultimate top segment! With this extremely soft fibre, you create a mirror-smooth end result without brush marks. The One by Staalmeester series is the Rolls-Royce among brushes!

Wax, Oil & Milk-Paint

These types of products require a specific type of brush. In our Classic series, we have therefore included a collection of blonde-haired brushes made of a mix of natural and synthetic (hog) bristles. Due to the stiffer fiber, both wax, oil and Milk-Paint are very easy to use.

Step 2: if all goes well, you now have a better idea of which brush series you want to use for your project. Are you still hesitating between, say, the One by Staalmeester series and the Pro-Hybrid series? Then realise that the One series generally (with the exception of the round brush & curved brush) contains brushes that are not available in any other series and that this series is the top segment of Staalmeester and in terms of quality cannot be compared to anything else. Hopefully, after our explanation of the different types of brushes, you will be able to make a perfect choice. Below, for each type of brush, we explain what kind of project it is suitable for.

Round brush

The round brush is a typical Dutch brush available in all Staalmeester® series. The brush is very versatile for both smaller and larger surfaces, including windows, window frames, doors and kitchen cabinets.

Pointed sash brush

The originally Belgian/French pointed sash brush is shaved into a point so that one can instantly cut in without problems. With this 2-in-1 pointed sash brush, you not only paint the fine work on window frames, profiles and corners of furniture, but also tackle larger surfaces effortlessly.

Bended fitch brush

The bended fitch brush, also known as the corner brush or Lyon brush, is perfect for painting hard-to-reach areas such as upper windows and corners. The bended fitch brush is available in all Staalmeester® series, including One by Staalmeester.

Flat brush

Whereas in the Netherlands, Staalmeester®’s home country, the round brush is mainly used, the flat brush is the most commonly used brush in Anglo-Saxon countries. The brush is ideally suited for painting larger surfaces such as doors, large pieces of furniture or floors.

Oval brush

The oval brush is the most popular brush among DIY/Home-decor painters as the oval shape of the brush makes it easy to switch between small and larger surfaces with the same brush.

Façade brush

The façade brush is perfect for painting larger, hard-to-reach areas due to its curved head. The brush is available with both a 35 and 20cm handle length making there a façade brush for every type of painting job.

Radiator brush

With its curved head and long handle, the radiator brush is perfect for painting hard-to-reach areas such as behind a radiator.

Wall brush

The wall brush is ideally suited for painting walls, ceilings and floors. With a wall brush, it is easier to fill pores in a wall or ceiling than with a roller. In addition, a wall brush is perfect for creating special effects on a wall using, for example, concrete-look paints.

Spalter brushes

Within our One by Staalmeester range, we have three spalter brushes. The flat spalter brush is also called a laying-off brush and is the best brush when you want to create a brush mark free, glassy-smooth, result. We also have the angled spalter brush in our range. This brush is not only suitable for topcoats but is also the perfect partner for drawing sharp lines along doorframes and window frames. Finally, we have the decoration spalter in our range. Thanks to the short handle of the decoration spalter, you can apply very accurate pressure and give the painting special effects. In addition, the short handle makes it easy to get into hard-to-reach areas such as the inside of a piece of furniture or kitchen cabinet.

Artist brushes

We have a unique collection of artist brushes in the One by Staalmeester series. The round artist brush is the perfect partner when painting, for example, natural landscapes on canvas. In addition, it is very suitable for lettering. The flattened artist brush (1090) can also be used very well for painting a painting or applying details to a piece of furniture or frame. The flat fitch  brush is suitable for finishing precision work such as edges. With the angled flat brush, you will draw the most fine and precise lines due to its unprecedented shape stability.

Hopefully, after reading this blog, you were able to make a choice for both the type of brush and the brush series. It is good to know that sometimes you need several products for one project. For example, the round brush is often used in combination with a bended fitch brush and a roller is often used in combination with a flat spalter brush. Perhaps this is also the case for your project….
